28mm Warrior Monks

Here are some warrior monks I painted up for a skirmish game. I mostly use square bases, but circular bases just simply look better for skirmishes. The Miniatures are from The Assault Group, a very good choice for earlier period samurai armies.

Some of their friends, wielding naginata. All in all I like the TAG warrior monks, even if they join the common misconception of warrior monks as always running around in full robes and cowls. This is largely a later, romantisized image, and a wargamer interested in a historical correct warrior monk army should sprinkle these into a force of both fully armed samurai and more haphazardly equipped retainers. And a copy of Mikael S. Adolphson's excellent "The teeth and claws of the Buddha:
monastic warriors and sohei in Japanese History", of course.
